Introduction
“Build a Foundation in Speaking, Reading and Writing in English!” Elementary Class
The continuation class is for kids who graduated from JUN’s kindergarten class and have moved on to elementary school. We also welcome returners from overseas and new students with good basic listening and comprehension skills.
These classes are 90 minutes long and are taught by a native speaker. The first section of the class is conversation based, using vocabulary from the monthly themes to practice speaking with the native teacher and doing activities to challenge what they have been learning. In the second half students will practice reading and writing using jolly phonics.
We use Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar, which is taught in public elementary schools in Britain. It is a fun way for children to learn how to read and write. It is a multi- sensory teaching method.

Individual reading practice is required for the more advanced students. They list the books they have read into their reading logs.
On our attendance cards we have a merit system where kids get stickers based on how well they performed and behaved during class. They collect stickers throughout the term and they can use them as points to get rewards at the end of the term.
The teachers introduce little games and activities to help encourage children’s motivation to study English.
For Halloween we do trick or treating at JUN and for Christmas we make Christmas cards. Interviews and consultations with the principal are arranged at the end of each term.
